Job Responsibilities

Under limited supervision, provides social work services to juveniles committed to the Midlands Evaluation Center. Services include: screening, assessment, and orientation of juveniles upon admission and case management during the court-ordered diagnostic evaluation program. Provides case management for juveniles assigned to caseload. Monitors juveniles during the evaluation process. Serves as member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Coordinates recommendations and a comprehensive plan for services with Psychology staff, DJJ Community Specialist, and representatives of other children's services agencies. Conducts diagnostic assessment interviews with Parents and/or legal guardians in order to complete evaluations in a timely manner. Maintains contact with family throughout the juvenile's evaluation and keeps family updated with pertinent information. Integrates behavioral observation and a needs-based assessment to produce a social worker report containing recommendations for intervention, judicial action, and placement. Completes forms necessary for this process to occur. Offers testimony in family court when subpoenaed. Provides intake services to juveniles on a rotating basis. Duties include, but are not limited to, conducting initial screening and mental status assessment of each juvenile admitted and conducting individual or group sessions. Provides crisis intervention to assigned caseload. Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required. Serves on agency committees/task forces as required. Provide on call services to the institution on a rotating basis. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a social work or social welfare program accredited by the Council on accredited institution, plus experience as a professional social worker.

Agency Requirements: A Master's degree from a Social Work program accredited by the CSWE and (1) year professional social work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Licensure by the South Carolina Board of Social Work Examiners.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires knowledge of social work principles, practices and techniques; extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws or regulations pertaining to social service programs; extensive knowledge of psychological, social human growth, personality principles and dynamics; considerable knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; ability to integrate and coordinate specialized services with those of other disciplines; ability to stimulate trust and engage juveniles in problem solving; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to apply social work principles and techniques in juvenile services/treatment. Requires an exceptionally flexible individual who is capable of a large work output, high level frustration tolerance, and the ability to utilize crisis intervention and realistic goal planning; requires an ability to function independently with frequent supervisor consultation. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
