SC Department of Public Safety Network Administrator I - Switch Router in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

General Responsibility: Under general supervision serve as a Network Administrator I in the SC Law Enforcement Division's, Office of Information Technology & Security.

Specific Duties: Assist in maintaining CISCO and other network components with firmware, IOS and other upgrades for the continued network service on the SLED infrastructure. Review hardware/software to keep components operational, secure and under maintenance. This includes routers and switches, plus VPNs, firewalls and centralized wireless AP's and the components located on all SLED campuses around the State. Monitor network switches and routers for any security, software, and hardware issues to be reported to the network team to be acted upon.

Serve as network team wiring and facilities support; supporting end-users and equipment physical connectivity to include end-user drops, equipment installations, network closet wiring and environmental management, compound fiber optics, and regional office network facilities. Must maintain strict access controls on all network equipment locations as required by Network/Security manager. Must oversee vendors/contractors as needed and verify they meet all SLED security and procurement requirements. Must verify vendors/contractors properly perform tasks as specified.

Research, review and recommend policy strategies to the Network/Security manager and other network team members as it relates to the network performance and security of the SLED infrastructure for the network hardware topology changes, Active Directory processes, DHCP standards, DNS policies, encryption standards, advance authentication and other IT areas such as VMWARE, IPS, IDS, and DMZ design.

Make recommendations for improvements following industry standards and law enforcement information exchange policies, report compliance issues and assist with maintaining and developing policies for the network infrastructure.

Prepare and guide audits on various components from a technology and policy perspective with the various technical components at SLED.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in information system and network design, installation, operation, repair, and maintenance or related experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degrees on a year-to-year basis. This experience must include technical support for a large complex network with a focus on network security, performance, and wiring infrastructure.

Must have a minimum of three (3) years installing, configuring, maintaining CISCO network hardware/software with switches, firewalls, routers, IPS, VPN, and cabling.

Knowledge of firewall procedures and security review to protect the infrastructure. Should have a working knowledge of Windows Server software, Active Directory-structures, DNS, DHCP and general communication protocols.

Knowledge of best practices for secure operation in networking trends for a complex environment. Ability to provide reports and suggest actions to diverse teams on security issues, network needs, and produce plans for future enhancements and expanded capacity

Position requires some travel and this may include overnight travel. This is a 24/7 infrastructure requiring on-call duty and work after hours and weekends as required.

Must be able to lift 15-50 pounds.
