SC Department of Public Safety Correctional Officer in Richland County, South Carolina
*Juvenile Detention Center - Richland County*
Under general supervision, exercises safety and security measures at the Detention Center. Also, observes and reports activities of institutionalized population and provides counseling to population as a function of the treatment plan. Provides school security as needed. Responsible for providing safety and security of all juveniles at the facility. Counsels juveniles as needed and refers to appropriate Clinician. Supervises and directs juvenile movement during various activities; maintains correct physical headcount at all times. Makes regular security checks of living units; completes and submits required reports. Observes, evaluates and reports on specific juvenile behavioral traits both positive and negative to appropriate staff to help determine specific group needs or interventions. Serves as a member of the local unit team meetings to develop a rehabilitative program for juveniles. Ensures that juveniles receive proper medical attention as needed. Supervises and conducts routine checks of living units relative to security and safety and ensures that the juvenile's well-being is being addressed. Attends training and maintains certification required by the Continuing Law Enforcement Education. Conducts routine and unannounced strip and frisk searches of juveniles. Performs other related duties, as required by a Supervisor.

*_Agency Requirements:_ Juvenile Correctional Officer I - *($30,271) : A high school diploma/GED, must be at least 21 years of age, and must successfully complete the Correctional Officer Basic Certification course within (1) year of employment. This position will receive a special assignment pay for performing these duties. Must have the ability to meet and maintain certification by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE).
*Juvenile Correctional Officer II - *($33,642) : A high school diploma/GED, must be at least 21 years of age, minimum of one (1) year experience in military, law enforcement, correctional or police work and must provide a copy of the Correctional Officer Basic Detention Certification certificate. This position will receive a special assignment pay for performing these duties. Must have the ability to meet and maintain certification by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE).
Necessary Special Requirement: Certification by the SC Criminal Justice Academy in accordance with 23-6-430 of the Code of Law of South Carolina (Basic Detention).

He/she must have knowledge of state laws/institutional rules/regulations/guidelines for the custody, control, and supervision of juveniles. Knowledge of SC Child Abuse statutes. Knowledge of purpose/methods/practices of secure facilities. Knowledge of various methods of instructing /handling/supervising juveniles in various activities. Ability to pass a competency examination on SCDJJ Policies and Procedures and Institutional guidelines and procedures. Ability to meet and maintain certification under the SC Law Enforcement Training Act. Essential Position that is under general supervision; work reviewed by supervisor on a daily basis; annually scheduled performance reviews. Willing to work any shift and stay over if necessary. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
