SC Department of Public Safety Archaeologist II in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Carries out the archaeological component of the review and compliance program for the State Historic Preservation Office. Reviews and comments on projects submitted for review, survey reports, data recovery reports, and memoranda of agreement related to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and certain state-level reviews. Evaluates significance of archaeological sites based on National Register of Historic Places criteria. Assesses the potential effect of proposed projects on archaeological sites. Provides archaeological expertise to federal and state agencies, consultants, and private individuals. Make site visits as needed. Interprets federal and state laws and regulations related to cultural resources. Supports ArchSite, the state's online GIS cultural resources information system in cooperation with the S.C. Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus at least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training on archaeological research, administration or management; and at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology. Coursework or experience with GIS software.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the field of archaeology. Familiarity with southeastern U.S. archaeology.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of historic preservation, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and its regulations, 36 CFR Part 800.
  • Ability to review and evaluate archaeological projects and reports for adherence to federal and state laws and regulations, and ability to apply National Register eligibility criteria to archaeological sites.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and database management. Experience with ArcGIS in PC environment and Microsoft programs.
  • The position requires initiative, judgment, tact, and organizational, time management, and communication skills .This includes the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the public, consultants, and staff; the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines; and the ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner in writing and verbally.

Preferred Qualifications

A graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology and 3 years full-time professional experience in archaeological research, administration, or management. Course work and experience with GIS software and database management.

Additional Comments

Position requires travel around the state, but overnight stays are generally not necessary. Must be able to obtain a valid S.C. driver's license.

Salary: $33,494.00 - $61,975.00 Annually
