Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Provides specialized occupational health nursing care for acute and preventive individuals. Facilitates communication between health care providers, employees and employers in order to provide quality, efficient health care.

Employment Qualifications

Education: Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred; graduate of an approved nursing school with an Associates degree in nursing will be considered.

Experience: Two years acute care of adults. Preference given to candidates with one year of occupational health experience, but will consider and train those with emergency room, ambulatory care, community health, family practice, or ICU experience.

Licensure: Licensed to practice professional nursing as an RN in South Carolina.

Certification: CPR. Progress towards certification in Occupational Health Nursing preferred. Pulmonary Function certification preferred. Hearing Conservation certification preferred.

Essential Job Functions

Demonstrates ability to make independent clinical judgments according to applicable standards of practice and provider instructions.

Adapts to dynamic environment and changing priorities.

Understands and works to service the multiple parties involved in treatment and management of work-related injuries.

Reports findings appropriately and in a timely manner, making referrals and recommendations as necessary.

Initiates and maintains appropriate documentation.

Communicates clearly with employees, employers, insurance providers and other health care providers.

Effectively instructs individuals and groups concerning the following: individual health care plan, healthy lifestyle choices, safety behaviors and work limitations.

Organizes and maintains efficient treatment areas by maintaining cost-effective and medically appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment. Cleans, calibrates, sterilizes and maintains equipment as appropriate.

Performs a variety of physical assessments to include the following:

  • Occupational and medical history

  • Physical exam

  • Vision screenings

  • Hearing screenings

  • Spirometry

  • EKG

  • Graded exercise tests

  • Breath Alcohol Tests

  • Urine Drug Screens

  • Venipuncture

  • Vaccine administration

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Provides patient care to Neonates, adults, geriatrics
