Roper St. Francis Healthcare MD Director-Oncology IPN in Charleston, South Carolina

The Medical Director of Oncology provides leadership in a Dyad model with the Director of Oncology Services in a matrix led healthcare system integrating care across the system’s hospitals, medical group, post-acute care, community, and affiliated physician practices in the Roper St. Francis primary and secondary markets. This position provides strategic and administrative leadership with responsibilities including strategic planning/implementation; clinical standardization; legal and regulatory compliance; business/program development; relationship development; and operational effectiveness.

Working in collaboration with the Director of Oncology Services, the Medical Director serves as the primary clinical leader responsible for Oncology services development and works with key physicians engaging them in developing best practice processes. Functions include but are not limited to: Radiation Oncology; Medical Oncology; West Ashley Cancer Center; Infusion Therapy; Cancer Registry; Hematology.

Monitors industry trends, identifies innovative solutions and designs best practice processes/standards. With the Director of Oncology Services, facilitates development of meaningful goals, strategies, and action plans; makes decisions on strategies, goals and processes; and collaborates with the medical staff to identify and recommend new service opportunities and prioritizes goals/opportunities. Communicates operational issues with the Director of Oncology Services to appropriate departments and senior administrators. Monitors progress/results, reports to appropriate leadership forums and holds self and others accountable.

In alignment with the Director of Oncology Services outlines growth opportunities to increase market share in the tri-county area with expansion to the secondary market; ensures affordability of cancer care by identification of cost reduction opportunities; improves quality, safety and engagement (patient and teammate) with metric development and performance improvement activities aligned with RSFHH system goals and decreases unnecessary variability by standardizing best practice processes and standards. Streamlines decision making while ensuring inclusiveness of input from all members of the oncology program. Achieves goals and where not, identifies causes and implements solutions to solve problems.

Works with the Director of Oncology Services to develop partnership affiliations and philanthropic support for the oncology program. Responsible for the recruitment of physicians and other clinical practitioners necessary to provide oncologic services. It is expected that this job will be a 0.6 FTE position. The option to maintain a clinical practice that complements the leadership duties will be considered on a case by case basis.

Minimum Qualifications:


Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited school of medicine.

Board certified in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Surgery with fellowship training in oncology, or any specialty with significant time devoted to cancer care.


• At least five (5) years’ experience as a practicing physician in a multidisciplinary cancer care environment required.

• At least one of the following: (1) Completion of the Physician Executive Leadership course offered by RSFH; (2) completion of or enrolled in an equivalent Physician Executive Leadership course; (3) a Master’s Degree in Business, Medical Management, or Healthcare related field; or (4) Certified Physician Executive via American Association of Physician Leaders.

• Prior managerial experience preferred

Licensure/Certification: Licensed Medical Doctor, Board Certification in Specialty Required.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of strategic planning, business plan development, and successful implementation of business plans. Knowledge of accreditation standards. Experience in clinical program development. Excellent analytical and strategic planning skills with a track record of recruiting and building high-performing clinical teams. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
