SC Department of Public Safety SCHP Corporal (Promotion) - Troop 6, Post A in Berkeley County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

THIS POSITION SERVES BERKELEY AND CHARLESTON COUNTIES.

Under general supervision, serves as a supervisor in assigned troop. Patrols and enforces the S.C Motor Vehicle traffic laws on streets and highways and enforces other criminal laws of the state. Investigates collisions, operates Breathalyzer and Radar. Supervises officers in the performance of their duties. Reviews subordinates' required daily and monthly reports and documentation. Reviews and assists subordinates in the presentation and prosecution of cases. Assists the Sergeant in reviewing selective enforcement data to determine personnel assignment needs and preparing work schedules.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

TIME IN GRADE – An applicant must have five (5) years of experience as a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper and must have held the rank of SCHP Lance Corporal for six months prior to the posted closing date of the vacancy.

EDUCATION – High school diploma or GED equivalency.

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a promotional examination for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.

PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL – An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who has been suspended for disciplinary reasons and/or involuntarily demoted during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy or during the subsequent selection process shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful Performance" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD – Any individual serving a probationary/trial period shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy 300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within 4 months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. _**Section IV. D.1 Field Personnel a. Troopers assigned to a Post shall establish residence in their assigned Post or, if residing outside of the Post, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which the assigned Post office is located within 45 minutes. IV. C. Troop/Region/Division/Unit/Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
